Rule 2: You Need a Great Derby Drink to Serve your Guests

Now that you have completed Derby party rule #1, you have to wear your hat when creating your drink. It just makes it more festive – don’t argue. The Derby drink of choice is the Mint Julep. There is the classic option, which contains fun juice, or you can use this alcohol-free recipe. Here is a simple ingredient recipe from Southern Living:

  • 3 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 tablespoon Mint Simple Syrup
  • Crushed Ice
  • 1.5 to 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) bourbon
  • 1 (4-inch) cocktail straw or coffee stirrer
  • 1 fresh mint sprig
  • Powdered sugar (optional)

Place mint leaves and Mint Simple Syrup in a chilled julep cup. Gently press leaves against cup with back of spoon to release flavors. Pack cup tightly with crushed ice. Insert straw, place mint sprig directly next to straw, and serve immediately. Sprinkle with powdered sugar, if desired.

Okay, put on your hat and grab your drink. It’s time to start planning your Derby party.
