Perhaps you’ve been carrying a gift card around in your wallet since the last holiday season, waiting for the perfect time to cash in on that steak dinner or finding just the right pair of shoes at that department store. Or possibly you stuck a gift card in your junk drawer and forgot about it altogether. It’s time to dig out those old cards because we have good news!
Did you know that billions of dollars in gift cards go unused each year according to industry estimates? According to The Wall Street Journal, an estimated $41 billion (that’s right, with a ‘b’) worth of gift cards went unspent between 2005 and 2011 alone.
Turn your Gift Cards into Cash
If you don’t anticipate using a gift card and are interested in redeeming the unused card for cash, you’re in luck. Sites like cardcash.com and giftcardrescue.com will pay up to 92 percent of the face value of your unused gift card, allowing you to sell your card for cash or purchase a discounted gift card to a merchant you’re more interested in purchasing from. Rescue that old gift card from your desk drawer or the console of your car and put it to good use once and for all.
This isn’t a bad thing to keep in mind. Especially when your grandparents sweetly present you with a generous gift card to that movie theater that isn’t located in your neck of the woods. Or that gift card you received in your company gift exchange when you aren’t a big coffee drinker.
